Landscape—Ambitious, In-Depth Assignment; Topic plan from today on.

You will create a wearable or performance-based artwork that addresses landscape either as place, potential, concept or folly.  Some artists from whom you can draw inspiration are Rebecca Horn, Helio Oiticica, Adrian Piper, Oskar Schlemmer, Loïe Fuller, Nick Cave (soundsuits, not musician), Louise Bourgeois (‘A Banquet’).

For critique, you will need to wear, or perform your work.  It is acceptable for you to have someone else wear your work, or to perform your work, provided that it is of professional quality.

Performances should last between 1 – 3 minutes in duration.

This is not a fashion show, jewelry display event, costume party or Halloween event (though it is timely,  isn’t it?).

Wearable art is not to be considered as an accessory, an embellishment, or otherwise decorative element.  Wearable art relies on the body for activation, and cannot exist or function in the same way off the body; it is an extension, expansion, or modification of the body.

This project is DUE Tuesday, October 30 at 10 AM.

We will have a presentation on Tuesday, October 23 that talks more about Land Art, Landscape and the Body-as-Site.  We will have an activity that day related to performance and also go to Keilah’s studio at 2 PM on October 23 as well.

Added information based on student questions:

You may present a documentation of performance if the performance is site-specific or has requirements that can't be met in the classroom (ex: use of a hose, house or horse).

To begin to approach this assignment, begin by considering your relationship to the body--to your body, specifically as a physical entity, and to your body as something that moves through the world.

Consider, also, that the category of "folly" relates to Marie Antoinette's Hameau, and the animal preserve created in the desert that we looked at in class--each of these are sites that require extensive investment of time, resources and money, and are reserved for a small group of people.  They also connote the idea of waste of resources and money when viewed by those who do not have access to the folly.  Additionally, the folly is something created primarily for diversion.  If you address this aspect of landscape, you have the ability to address both social and class issues.
