Topic Four: Landscape--Representation, Intervention and Body-as-Site

This will be an expansive topic that addresses both historical and contemporary art.  We examine the relationship of humans to nature, humanity to the land, culture as an intervention in the landscape, and the body as a representation of site.

This unit will require two outside visits; one will be to an actual garden, and the other will be to a museum exhibition or to an artist talk or panel discussion.  We are fortunate to have a lot of exhibitions in town that address the issues under consideration for this topic.  This topic will also require one or more reading/research assignments.

Your first assignments are listed here; there will be more added at a later date in another post.

Reading #1: Green Dreams (Eccentric Spaces [Chapter 1], by Robert Harbison), DUE October 15 at 10 PM.  This reading will be distributed in class; the response form is found here.

This is an observational exercise and will require you to immerse yourself in the landscape or city. For this assignment, choose either a or b. Allow yourself to be informed by what we learned from the viewing of Rivers and Tides.

a) Street.
Step 1-
Choose a street.
Walk the length of it, as far as you can.
Find a place to sit and observe.

Step 2-
Use this information to make an imaginary creation in your studio. Size: 10 inches minimum, shortest dimension, media of your choice.

b) Garden.
Step 1-
Choose a garden or park, a public place, not your back yard.
